Why Choose A Specialist Instead of a Generalist?

Many of our clients unfortunately come to us having already spent a lot of time and money on therapy that didn’t work, until they eventually realize: seeing an anxiety and OCD specialist is worth it.

Most therapists are generalists, meaning they treat clients with a wide variety of problems (like a primary care physician). But we are anxiety and OCD specialists, meaning we spend all of our time treating clients with anxiety and OCD (like a heart surgeon, who spends all their time treating heart problems).

Just like you wouldn’t go to your primary care physician if you needed heart surgery, an anxiety therapist is best for treating a serious anxiety problem. That’s because anxiety and OCD often require different treatment methods than other mental health issues. A therapist who only treats clients with anxiety and OCD has more experience with these methods and more specialized training than a therapist who treats lots of different things.

This is especially important with anxiety and OCD because not many therapists are trained in the gold standard treatment for anxiety and OCD: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with an emphasis on Exposure Therapy.

Here is what the Anxiety and Depression Association of America says about CBT and Exposure Therapy.

And here is advice from the International OCD Foundation on how to choose the right therapist.

With most generalist therapists, you won’t get treatments that research evidence says work best for anxiety and OCD.

Don’t waste your time and money on something that is less likely to work. You deserve the best, most effective treatment possible.

  • Dr. Damon is phenomenal. He brought laughter and humor into the very difficult struggles that my teenager was dealing with. After just a few short months of hard work she was able to reach all of the goals that she made when she started working with him. He is such a professional and his counseling style is so unique. We are very thankful to have found him.
  • Matt was great, had a plan from day 1 that we worked through week after week. Great therapist, looking for long term solutions and not short term fixes.
  • Dr. Damon was super personable and a pleasure to work with.
  • I want to thank Dr. Damon for everything he has done to help me. I was feeling very hopeless with my anxiety before I started therapy. But now I feel like the future is brighter and I have the tools to deal with my anxiety and live a happier life.
  • Dr. Damon was very helpful – he spoke in language that met my son where he was – not condescending or over his head. He explained what exposure therapy was and why he thought it would benefit my son. We appreciated his sense of humor as well. We would definitely recommend Dr. Damon to others struggling with anxiety.
  • Matt understood my perspective and what I had gone through and applied that to his plan for helping me. I didn’t feel like I got stock anxiety tips. We also related well and I believe he adapted his approach based on my personality and situation.

Natalie’s Success Story:

From Persistent Fear About Her Health to Knowing How to Stop Worrying

Natalie had intense fears about her health and quality of life deteriorating.

She began to notice an increasing frequency of panic attacks coupled with anxiety around her health. She was exceedingly hypervigilant for any physical changes and sensations and would quickly shift all her focus and energy onto any perceived illness or injury.

As a result, she spent an increasing amount of time trying to avoid any physical discomfort or any uncomfortable situation. She regularly visited the doctor and spent a lot of time googling her medical concerns in the hopes of figuring it all out. While she was worried about her health, she also knew she had anxiety and that she needed help.

She found Anxiety Solutions and was eager to try a new approach: Exposure Therapy. She started seeing Dr. Damon for specialized help with her anxiety. In Exposure Therapy, Natalie gained a new understanding of anxiety and what to do about it.

Using the strategies she practiced with Dr. Damon, Natalie noticed a drastic reduction in the frequency of her panic attacks and overall intensity of her anxiety.

She found herself worrying much less about her health. Natalie returned to all her previously enjoyed activities and finally felt like she, not the anxiety, was in control of her future.

Luke’s Success Story:

From OCD About Germs Ruining His Home Life to A Return to Normalcy

Luke had always been uneasy around germs.

For a long time, it didn’t cause any major inconvenience, although he had noticed it gradually worsening over time. But as Luke’s life became more stressful, he noticed his fears started to take over his life. He began to develop specific fears around his family members getting seriously ill. He knew he had developed OCD.

He spent a lot of time compulsively washing his hands. He repeatedly washed his clothes and had strict rituals for using the washer and dryer to make sure no unexpected germs contaminated the washing process. Luke began limiting activities his family could do in specific rooms, to the point where home life seemed to consist more of preventing contamination with germs than actually relaxing and living in their home.

Finally, Luke found Anxiety Solutions and wanted to try Exposure Therapy. He began seeing me (Dr. Damon) for treatment.

Thanks to our work together, he saw a significant drop in his fear of germs and he no longer felt the need to wash his hands or objects excessively.

Luke began to willingly confront his fears and obsessions without compulsive behaviors. He became able to more clearly identify when OCD would twist or exaggerate whether something was really dirty or dangerous, leading to a greater sense of self-confidence. He loosened the restrictions on his family, which created a more peaceful home life. Luke even got to the point of feeling completely comfortable in situations that used to cause him severe anxiety.
