Who We Help
- Generalized anxiety: excessive worry, rumination, or obsessiveness. The worry can be about virtually anything but in most cases is focused on some form of uncertainty about the future. Worrying is typically an attempt to neutralize uncertainty and the anxiety that comes with it by trying to feel reassured and resolved about what is going to happen. Unfortunately, because certainty is usually impossible to achieve, this becomes an endless cycle of rumination, reassurance seeking, and anxiety.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Anxiety (and often guilt) in response to an intrusive, repetitive, unwanted thought. This anxiety is then temporarily relieved by performing some sort of repetitive behavior (the compulsion). OCD can take many different forms but some common examples are fear of contamination with germs, bodily fluids, or chemicals; unwanted thoughts about hurting other people, unwanted sexual thoughts, thoughts that go against a person’s religion, and repetitive checking behaviors or reassurance-seeking.
- Panic Disorder: Recurrent panic attacks, which are periods of very intense anxiety that cause extremely uncomfortable physical sensations such as dizziness, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, racing heart, and chest tightness. People with panic attacks often worry that there is something medically wrong. Panic disorder often leads to restricting activity and avoiding certain situations to try to prevent panic attacks. There is a lot of anxiety about the attacks themselves, which is why panic disorder is often referred to as “anxiety about anxiety”.
- Social anxiety: Fear and avoidance of social situations. The anxiety is often about what other people will think, negative judgment by others, and experiencing embarrassment and shame. People with social anxiety often feel that they are awkward or that they don’t know how to carry on a conversation like everyone else. They typically have a negative view of their own social skills and may have a hard time forming friendships and relationships because they typically seek to avoid social interaction as much as possible.
How We Help
Our therapists primarily use Exposure Therapy, a type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Exposure Therapy focuses on helping you face your fears and anxiety triggers in order to retrain your brain that they are not actually dangerous. Exposure Therapy is a powerful treatment, and there is even research evidence that it creates positive changes in brain chemistry.
Exposure Therapy is a much more active treatment than your traditional, stereotypical “talk therapy”. Your therapist will actively teach you skills and in many cases will even go outside the office with you to practice directly confronting anxiety triggers. It has been proven effective in research studies for all types of anxiety, even those that do not involve a physical anxiety trigger (e.g. generalized anxiety/worry, where the trigger for anxiety is the feeling of uncertainty and the target for exposures is building a tolerance of uncertainty). Our experience has been that we can help people achieve life-changing results with any type of anxiety.
Therapy with us is 1-on-1 individual therapy, with family members brought into sessions as needed at times, especially with child clients. Our treatments typically work relatively quickly; 10 to 15 sessions is an average range for treatment for most anxiety disorders, and most of our clients come once per week, so a full course of successful treatment typically takes several months. Though the length and timeline of treatment depend on a number of factors that differ for each client, most clients typically begin to see improvements within the first few sessions.
